Song of the Week: ‘Try’ by Colbie Caillat

Colbie Caillat Try

Today, there are so many different pressures we feel the need to conform to, whether it concerns the way we look or the way we act. There’s the pressure to always accommodate what other people will think of us into the way we look and act. Soon, we find ourselves changing ourselves to help us feel like we belong, thinking that we need to change ourselves in order for people to like us. This is an impossible idea; we constantly have to fix what we don’t have naturally. It isn’t a simple click of a button. But Colbie Caillat’s ‘Try’ reminds us that we don’t have to try to fit in, as long as we are happy with ourselves. And if we want to maintain how we look, that is ok, as long as we do it for ourselves and as long as we can still accept ourselves without the maintenance. Sometimes it is hard for us to be happy with ourselves, because we have those voices of others echoing in the backs of our minds; we’ve become so accustomed to the pressure. We need to change those voices. We need to change the idea that people won’t accept us for who we are – or at least rid ourselves of the idea. It all starts in our own minds until it feels strong enough to branch out into the wider world. We need to start liking each other and ourselves for who we are. Let’s not hide behind any masks of pretence. It’s too exhausting and never fulfilling enough. Let’s love ourselves and each other for what we can offer and what is natural, and with that, others will learn to love us too.
