Sometimes, we have to be honest, direct and disciplined, to kick ourselves into gear. Sometimes, we have to hustle. Because no one can hand us our dreams, our time, or our successes. Because no one can tell us who we are, how to think or what to do. Because no one can feed us passion, persistence or positivity. That all brews within. It’s up to us. We’re all beautiful and capable, and very much so. And it’s up to us to unleash that. Don’t let yourself fall behind. Don’t let yourself miss a window of opportunity. Don’t leave yourself with second best. Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.
What could we do differently? It’s a question we should perhaps ask ourselves more often. We shouldn’t constantly focus on the problems, the flaws and the mistakes, but sometimes there are simple solutions that lie with us. It’s not that we have to do different things, but do things differently. Look through a different lens. Fail fast and learn quickly. Repeat the cycle. We are the students, the innovators, the fixers, the examples, the legacies. When we adapt, we thrive and the world thrives too.
We are all terrified. Of something. Of everything. We’re terrified of letting people down. We’re terrified of failing. We’re terrified of commitments. We’re terrified of believing in ourselves. We’re terrified of saying how we actually feel. We’re terrified of the world and terrified of ourselves. And so much more in between. It stops us. It chains us. It breaks us. But does it have to? We might not always be able to conquer our fears, but don’t let them conquer you. Act in spite of them. And one day, we won’t be so afraid anymore.
Our biggest blessing is that we are the ones in control of our fate. We make the choices. Our biggest misfortune is that we are the ones in control of our fate. We cannot wait around for great things to happen. We should not wait around for permission to make great things happen. We should not shy away from making great things happen because other things we tried never materialised. Only we can make great things happen. We have to choose to make great things happen and to let great things happen. Because greatness lies within us, not outside in the world. We have to be persistent, forgiving, loyal, flexible, and visionary. We are in control of who we are and what we do. And that’s how we’ll make it count, the only way how we’ll make things happen.
Regret can be bitter, distressing, and fierce. It gnaws at our pleasure, our time, and our sense of self. But we are always making decisions and taking paths. To regret one of those choices is to assume that life would be better if we had made a different one. But really, that’s just holding onto a possibility to avoid facing reality. Our reality isn’t something we should regret, no matter what circumstances we’re in. We wouldn’t be who we are without all the moments that have led up to now. And these are the moments that turn tragedies into joy and fortune. Our reality now doesn’t need to be our reality tomorrow. We are always capable of learning and changing. If we care enough to regret, then we should care enough to act. Life isn’t over because we’ve made a mistake. It’s just another beginning.
There are so many limitations we place on ourselves that make it more and more difficult to act. But as life is for living, here are three things I believe we should always act on:
- Dreams – It’s a beautiful feeling to have a dream. But dreams shouldn’t be stored away inside our minds as an escape from reality. Dreams should be our vision for ourselves and the world and we should do everything we can to transform them into reality. Dreams are the way we make life better, for ourselves and for others.
- Bullying – When we see a person verbally or physically assaulting another person, we shouldn’t be watching on the sidelines. It can be daunting to put ourselves in the firing line, but nobody should be forced to live in the fear, the insecurity and the hate that a bully inflicts on them. By standing up to bullying, we’re standing up to the control negativity can have over us.
- Instincts – We should always follow our senses, our gut feelings, our instincts. Because at the end of the day, we know ourselves best and what feels right for us, more than anyone else can. And if that lead us astray into a pile of mistakes, even better. That means we’re actually living and not just breathing.
