Have courage

Have courage. It doesn’t take perfection or genius to get further in life. It takes guts. We shouldn’t be afraid of failing but afraid of not trying at all. We shouldn’t be afraid of stepping out of our comfort zone but afraid of trapping ourselves in it. We shouldn’t be afraid of our flaws but afraid of not realising their magic. We need to keep trying, keep going, to get further. We won’t ever be perfect. We won’t all be geniuses. But no matter what you think, we can all be brave. And that’s what will get us the furthest.

A fearful friend

Imagine your fear is a friend – a paranoid, anxious and fearful friend. How could you treat them? Would you feed the fear? Would you calm the fear? Would you ignore the fear? Sometimes it’s a combination of all kinds. But what they all have in common is compassion; we would want the best for our friend. And we should extend that same courtesy to ourselves. Sometimes we have to show ourselves a little compassion, accept that we’ve set ourselves certain limits and try to move past them. Fear is a friend we should be comfortable chatting with. Fear will always be with us, so why not treat it as a friend and let it travel this journey with you? Don’t fight it, confide in it. Don’t hate it, embrace it. Fear is a friend who’s misunderstood.

Courage

We often mistakenly associate acts of courage with great leaders and heroes. We often forget that courage lies within each of us. Courage doesn’t need to be on a large scale. We don’t have to put our life in the balance to be courageous. And we don’t need to be strong all the time to be courageous. No, courage can simply be admitting how you feel. Courage can be refusing to live by other people’s rules. Courage can be letting go or holding on. Courage can be choosing not to give up. Courage can be realising that you are your own hero. And that courage within will most likely nurture someone else’s courage too. Don’t be afraid of yourself, who you are and how you feel. Own it.

Take that leap

Fortune favours the brave

When we’re about to jump, a number of emotions are packed into a tiny moment. Some of us shut our eyes. Some of us take a deep breath. Some of us stop breathing all together. Some of us let out a scream. Yet, there isn’t another time we feel more alive. It might be scary to take a leap, but it will be worth it in the end. Let go of the fears, the past, the inhibitions, the stories, the expectations. Be bold. Be daring. Be fierce. Be brave. Because good fortune will follow.

Three ways to boost your confidence

to_be_more_confident

  1. Be willing to fail – easier said than done, but a lack of confidence often translates into a fear of failing and looking bad. But if we at least try to overcome our fears, we deny them control over our self-perception. Start small and step a bit out of your comfort zone. It doesn’t matter if you slip or trip or fall. It matters that you get up again.
  2. Let go of your mistakes – letting your mistakes hover over you like a dark cloud guarantees it will rain. Don’t be so hung up on the consequences of the mistake but rather the lesson. Forgive yourself and move on. If you’re constantly reminding yourself about that time you messed up, chances are you’ll mess up again. And that’s not going to help your confidence much.
  3. Be yourself and please yourself – it may not feel like it, but it takes a considerable amount of effort to be someone else. And because we know that we won’t ever be able to pull it off, we lose confidence. Don’t negate yourself and impersonate someone else. Allow yourself to be yourself and work on yourself. It will be much more comfortable and liberating.

Be brave and make a change

Be brave. If a part of our life doesn’t make us happy, we should make every effort to change it. Sometimes it means leaving behind the security and comfort of the familiar. Sometimes it means going against what is thought or expected of us. Sometimes it means taking a few steps back in order to propel forward. Be brave enough to admit what doesn’t make you happy and do something about it, even if you start out small. Because what other point is there to life other than to be happy?
