Many of us are scared to be alone with our thoughts. We’re scared of what they might say and how they might make us feel. We’re so plugged in and invested in other people’s worlds, but neglect out own. Here’s three reasons to tune into what’s going on inside your head.
Reason One: Find solutions
When we listen to our thoughts and emotions, it’s likely that we’ll shed light on insecurities, anxieties and fears. But don’t be afraid. Instead of burying them away, we can actually face them and find ways to conquer them. We’ll see they’re not untameable. We’ll start to untangle the problems and find ways to overcome them.
Reason Two: Set direction
When we get in touch with our thoughts and emotions, we begin to understand where we want to go. Sometimes we wander aimlessly because we’re lost. Sometimes we find ourselves walking a path because we’re following someone else. We’re not really thinking about what we want and where we want to go. But if you actually do take the time to think and listen, and you follow what your heart is saying, you’ll never be steered wrong.
Reason Three: Realise who you are
When we tune into our thoughts and emotions, we drown out the noise around us and find out who we are. That might be someone who doesn’t care what people think. That might be someone who stands up for what they believe in. That might be someone who sees things differently. Whoever you are, you don’t need to lock them away. Find out what you like and don’t like, where you want to go and what you want to do.

Remember why you started and keep going. Look back at how far you’ve come and keep going. Imagine where you could be and keep going. Keep going, keep trying, keep hustling. Think how much you’ll have to show for it. Whether you end up making a u-turn, staring at a crossroad, or coming to a dead-end, just keep going. Don’t sit on the fence and let life pass by.
Over time, our perspectives can slowly become clouded, our direction can become aimless, and our vision can crumble. Sometimes we don’t notice. Sometimes we do but we keep doing more of the same anyway. But every now and then, we need to take a moment to refocus. Those moments can put us back on track or reveal an entirely new road. Those moments can reenergise us by uncovering what matters most to us. Those moments help us figure out what’s working and isn’t. Don’t underestimate those moments. Stop and refocus the lens. You’ll notice much better quality if you do.
We can walk in any direction we choose. Sometimes we feel trapped, inundated, anchored. But walls are only in our mind. We can be whoever we want to be. It’s never been more possible to travel to a completely different place. It’s never been more possible to innovate and create a career out of passion. It’s never been more possible to be unconventional and original. We hold the map. The world is ours. Walk, run, drive, fly. Push forward and keep going. Axe those walls down and free yourself. And follow your heart.
As I look back on my life, I realise that every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being redirected to something better – Steve Maraboli
Quote of the day.
Take it one day at a time. Contrary to what we might think, one day is enough. We can take a step further in the direction we’re headed. Or we might choose to change our destination. We can take a breath, re-evaluate, re-energise. We can take a look around and marvel at the world. We can take a moment to look back and see how far we’ve come. We can take any unnecessary burdens off our shoulders. Or we might pick up new treasures to cherish. Every day is a chance to start, end, try, fail, wonder, accomplish, and enjoy. So much can happen in a day. Don’t underestimate them. And most of all, don’t waste them.
Not all who wander are lost. But even wandering has purpose. Where are you headed? Because the direction we choose to head in will lead us to the place we end up in. What does that place look like? It’s hard to know which direction is the right one. And we naturally change our minds all the time. But it’s important to realise that we do not need to follow the rules, the expectations, the norm or the easy. We need to follow our heart, no matter how thorny, overwhelming, difficult or lonely it may seem. Because even if it turns out to be all those things, even if the destination is nothing like we imagined, and even if we change our mind, at least we sacrifice that yearning inside. Our heart will always lead us to where we’re meant to be.
