Three reasons to be alone with your thoughts

Many of us are scared to be alone with our thoughts. We’re scared of what they might say and how they might make us feel. We’re so plugged in and invested in other people’s worlds, but neglect out own. Here’s three reasons to tune into what’s going on inside your head.

Reason One: Find solutions

When we listen to our thoughts and emotions, it’s likely that we’ll shed light on insecurities, anxieties and fears. But don’t be afraid. Instead of burying them away, we can actually face them and find ways to conquer them. We’ll see they’re not untameable. We’ll start to untangle the problems and find ways to overcome them.

Reason Two: Set direction

When we get in touch with our thoughts and emotions, we begin to understand where we want to go.  Sometimes we wander aimlessly because we’re lost. Sometimes we find ourselves walking a path because we’re following someone else. We’re not really thinking about what we want and where we want to go. But if you actually do take the time to think and listen, and you follow what your heart is saying, you’ll never be steered wrong.

Reason Three: Realise who you are

When we tune into our thoughts and emotions, we drown out the noise around us and find out who we are. That might be someone who doesn’t care what people think. That might be someone who stands up for what they believe in. That might be someone who sees things differently. Whoever you are, you don’t need to lock them away. Find out what you like and don’t like, where you want to go and what you want to do.

You are powerful

We are all powerful. But some of us abuse our power and some of us don’t realise we have any at all. Be mindful of how you’re using it or how you’re losing it. Power isn’t reserved for a few. And those who try to make it seem like that’s so are the ones who are trying to take your power away from you. But power isn’t just about being the one at the top. It can be about spreading positivity, standing up for something, pushing yourself forward, changing your mind, using your voice and so on. Don’t let anyone make you feel powerless. You are in control of your life.

You can make a difference

life-quotes-18

Our hands can make a difference. Our mind can make a difference. Our words can make a difference. It can be as simple as saying thank you to someone who we take for granted. It can be as simple as acknowledging a homeless person. It can be as simple as educating someone on an important matter. The list is endless. We might seem futile, but we’re anything other than that. We’re powerful. Our actions are powerful, even the simple ones. When combined, they create tremors across society, across thinking, across the world. Don’t underestimate your ability to bring about change for the greater good. The world, after all, is in each of our hands.

Four times to forgive yourself

forgive-yourself

Even though we often tend to relive it, we ultimately cannot change the past. And whilst punishing ourselves seems to fit what we think we deserve, we need to learn to forgive ourselves. Because without forgiveness, there’s no moving forward and then there’s no future. We should always forgive ourselves for our mistakes, but here are a few times when we definitely should:

  1. When we let other people down – sometimes we have to do what’s best for us. And sometimes that’s borne out of things beyond our control. We cannot always please everyone and satisfy our own passions and dreams at the same time. At the end of the day, we have one life and we have to live it.
  2. When we trust the wrong person – we cannot see the inner workings of another person. So we cannot expect ourselves to know another’s intentions or predict another’s actions. Trust might be hard to hand out again next time, but don’t give up on it, because relationships are beautiful. They mean you’re living and not hiding.
  3. When we think we should be perfect – we set high expectations of ourselves, even if they’ve been created by somebody else. We all have limitations that we either need to accept or overcome. Don’t be so harsh on yourself. It’s ok to mess up. That’s how we get better.
  4. When we gave up on something – we all have times when we give up on something for a particular reason, whether temporary or permanent. And later on, we might come to regret that. But it’s never too late to start on an old or a new ambition. Learn a lesson from the last experience and push past that hurdle this time.

There is no sense in punishing your future for the mistakes of your past. Forgive yourself, grow from it, and then let it go.

What do you need to get better at forgiving yourself for?
