No matter what we do, someone will always find something to pick at. Criticism can be hurtful and debilitating, whether it comes from someone we trust or a complete stranger. But there’s only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing and be nothing. So we might as well do what we want, say what we want and be who we want. If we cannot please everyone, we might as well start by pleasing ourselves. Because the only person who has to live with our choices is ourselves – not anyone else. Don’t let criticism stop you from going where you want to go. Worse than facing criticism would be ignoring your heart.
As much as we would like to, we will never be able to please everyone. We all have only a certain amount of hours in the day. We all have a certain number of priorities to be met; and these may come into conflict with others’ priorities. We all only have one life, and since it ours, we need to fill it with whatever pleases us. Sometimes we have to say no to others. Sometimes we have to focus on a set group of people. Sometimes we have to accept that somebody will always have something negative to say about us. But through it all, we need to stand up for our vision of our own life. If we try to please everyone, something will always be sacrificed – and that may detrimentally be the one thing we most want to pursue. We need to follow our own hearts, passions and dreams, no matter how strange, obscure or unknown they are, otherwise we will always feel empty and bitter. Ignore the unsupportive, the doubters, the haters. Trust your heart.
