In life, we end up spending too much time trying to connect the dots plotted out for us. Instead, we should be brave enough to draw outside the predetermined lines. For many of us, progress, happiness and success fall outside those lines. So don’t be afraid to get a little messy, roam with no set destination, or go off on a tangent. Trust your instincts and trust your heart. When we finally learn that there are no lines that bind us, we finally see that happiness, success and progress are not found along them, but beyond them.
Strive to be better than you were yesterday. At loving, at dreaming, at hustling. We don’t need to be the best. We don’t need to be perfect. Be ambitious, but don’t toss away progress for the idea of perfection. Perfection poisons our minds to the point where we do nothing at all. We end up telling ourselves perfection is unattainable before we even get started. In truth, we’re all just a work in progress. Progress is attainable. And that’s how it should be.
The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin D. Roosevelt

Change is terrifying, testing, and inevitable. But it is also essential, beneficial and awesome. Here’s a few reasons why:
- We are challenged to experience new things. Most of us are afraid of change because it is so unknown and ultimately out of our comfort zone. But where’s the sense of adventure, curiosity and wonder in staying in the same place? We are given the opportunity to explore more of the world and its array of colours through change.
- Along with our new experiences, we grow as a person; we learn not only about the situations we are put in, but also about ourselves. We might make mistakes, but they are never wasted, because we are always taking in what we should do better next time, how to approach different situations and how to adapt.
- Life will progress with change. Without being able to experience or learn anything new, we would never be able to see the flaws in ourselves or the world. And without change, we would never realise that impossibilities can become possibilities, that limits are only figments of the imagination, that what we know now is only a snippet of what we can know. Without change, we would never be able to start again or improve. Change means that we can become whoever we want to be and create a world that we want to see.
Change is a daunting prospect, whether it is forced upon us or we willingly yearn for it. Either way it can be difficult. But even if we were to stay in the same place, everything around us would be changing. So we shouldn’t be afraid of it. In fact, we should kindle it, because change is the only cure for any emptiness inside. Sometimes it is a change in mindset and other times a change in action, but change is necessary nonetheless.
Perhaps there are times when we feel bored, disinterested and lazy, especially when every day feels the same. Maybe we find ourselves distracted, procrastinating or day-dreaming, because we long for something different. Perhaps we are easily irritated by the people and environment we were once so fond of, and now we feel trapped and itching for something else. Maybe we keeping promising, but instead we spend most nights feeling guilty, unsatisfied and unhappy with ourselves.
These emotions, along with many others, are telling us that change is imperative to our happiness, success and progress. In the end, we are the only ones who will let ourselves down if we don’t try to move, in whatever capacity we can. So let’s explore, discover, and experiment.
That which we put our utmost effort into will be that which we value the most. We cannot expect opportunities to fall into our laps, for people to continue to seek relationships with us, or for growth, progress and achievement, without some effort. The results may not be instantaneous. They may even be shadowed with unfavourable light, troublesome circumstances, and moments of pressure. Effort is hard work in itself. But good things come to those who do and to those who wait. Be determined and persevere.
Some change we cannot predict and some change we do not welcome. But those changes we envision for the future, those we crave and desire, are often the ones we must take action for. We will never be able to begin a new adventure or never progress in our ventures without acting. We will never know where our life will take us without trying out possibilities and taking opportunities. We will never grow or help something else grow without asking questions. We will never stop struggling if we never ask for help as much as finding the strength within. Nobody will know what we’re feeling if we never let them know. We can’t expect everything we want to happen without working for it. And most of the time, it takes a lot less than we think. Start small and simple. Every little helps. Any step is one step forward.
