Starting is both exhilarating and terrifying. There’s a voice in our head asking ‘How great will it be if I take on this journey? How great will it be if I succeed?’ But it’s often drowned out by a louder voice, questioning ‘What if I fail? What if I stumble? What if I give up and can’t do it anymore?’ Little do we know that mistakes, failures, setbacks, they’ll catch us whatever we do – wouldn’t the biggest mistake be not trying at all? Nowhere in its definition does starting have an expiration date. It’s not only available in the New Year, at the beginning of the month or on a Monday. We can start whenever we want, we can start again as many times as we need, and we can change our path along the way. It doesn’t matter how many times we fall down, as long as we pick ourselves back up again. Don’t let that loud terrified voice drown out the exhilarated one. Today is the day to take that step towards something great.
Sometimes we get that high from life, that burst of energy, that swing in our step. We want to conquer everything on our list of goals and visions. But after a while, we lose that high, that burst, that swing, because we’re so overwhelmed, disorientated and exhausted by our plans. We need to realise that we sometimes have to start from the bottom of the staircase and sometimes we can only see the first few steps. Don’t try and create a whole new lifestyle with the snap of a finger. To keep that high, that burst, that swing, we have to pace ourselves and realise that we will need to work on ourselves and our craft. You’ll go much further if you take your time.
Happiness takes work. We find it in accomplishments, in relationships, in dreams. And they take work. But we have to remember to sometimes stop, wherever we are, and take in that moment to be happy. There’s so much to be happy about right in front of us too, whether we’re at the bottom of the mountain, in the middle of a tightrope, or at the finish line. Don’t forget to be happy during your pursuit to happiness too. Otherwise, can we ever be happy at all?
You’re never too old to start something new. You’re never too old to start something again. It’s just the beginning, wherever you are. Life should be a pile of tickets, not a set of barriers. We can do anything, be anything, go anywhere. Our journey doesn’t have to be a straight line – and most likely it won’t be. Just go for it. Live as hard as you can.
It’s never too late. To say sorry. To be honest. To try again. To change your mind. To learn a lesson. To turn around. To alter your perceptions. To be who you might have been. To be who you want to be. We can always start now, no matter how old we are, how tied down we are, or how scared we are. We’ll never know unless we try. It’s never too late. Give it a go.
Take it one day at a time. Contrary to what we might think, one day is enough. We can take a step further in the direction we’re headed. Or we might choose to change our destination. We can take a breath, re-evaluate, re-energise. We can take a look around and marvel at the world. We can take a moment to look back and see how far we’ve come. We can take any unnecessary burdens off our shoulders. Or we might pick up new treasures to cherish. Every day is a chance to start, end, try, fail, wonder, accomplish, and enjoy. So much can happen in a day. Don’t underestimate them. And most of all, don’t waste them.
The idea of beginning again or trying again is daunting, overwhelming and disheartening. We’re creatures who find comfort in sticking to the way things are. It’s what we know. But the truth is that not everything we know works to give us our best chance at life. And when things aren’t working, we have to find a way to change them in order to give ourselves that best chance. Sometimes our relationships with other people are restricting or our relationship with ourselves is unhealthy. Sometimes our environment weighs us down or our day to day life doesn’t inspire us. Sometimes what we desperately hope will work won’t. And this is when we should tell ourselves that it’s ok to turn over a new leaf, whether it’s to plunge into the unknown or take a little dip. Because we all deserve our best chance at life. And we’re the ones who bestow that gift to ourselves. Don’t hide it away.
Every journey begins with one step. Winning gold at the Olympics, climbing up Mount Everest, and walking on the moon – they all began with one step. Whoever we see ahead of us travelling a similar path, whoever we see ahead as victors of what we want to achieve, they too started with one step. It’s not impossible for us. We might not all be carrying the same load. But all those who are prosperous and victorious have waded through their own battles. We all have the ability to begin and to do our best. We can all reach new triumphs, new heights and new lands, if we take the first step. Anywhere worth being is worth working for. What are you waiting for?
