Three reasons to be alone with your thoughts

Many of us are scared to be alone with our thoughts. We’re scared of what they might say and how they might make us feel. We’re so plugged in and invested in other people’s worlds, but neglect out own. Here’s three reasons to tune into what’s going on inside your head.

Reason One: Find solutions

When we listen to our thoughts and emotions, it’s likely that we’ll shed light on insecurities, anxieties and fears. But don’t be afraid. Instead of burying them away, we can actually face them and find ways to conquer them. We’ll see they’re not untameable. We’ll start to untangle the problems and find ways to overcome them.

Reason Two: Set direction

When we get in touch with our thoughts and emotions, we begin to understand where we want to go.  Sometimes we wander aimlessly because we’re lost. Sometimes we find ourselves walking a path because we’re following someone else. We’re not really thinking about what we want and where we want to go. But if you actually do take the time to think and listen, and you follow what your heart is saying, you’ll never be steered wrong.

Reason Three: Realise who you are

When we tune into our thoughts and emotions, we drown out the noise around us and find out who we are. That might be someone who doesn’t care what people think. That might be someone who stands up for what they believe in. That might be someone who sees things differently. Whoever you are, you don’t need to lock them away. Find out what you like and don’t like, where you want to go and what you want to do.

What does Feminism mean to me?

To me, feminism is about equality. It’s about a seat at the table, a voice, recognition. It’s about inclusion. It’s about transcending differences. To me, being a feminist means supporting each other – man or woman – not tearing them down. Being a feminist is about making room for everyone, not about being on top. Being a feminist shouldn’t be an embarrassment. It shouldn’t be an accusation. It shouldn’t only be for women. To me, the foundations of feminism are very real; women are treated as lesser to men in many ways all around the world, sometimes in places that feel so far removed from us, and sometimes right under our noses. To me, feminism is something we should all strive for – whether man or woman. How wouldn’t we all benefit from equality, opportunity and love? Let’s keep going until we don’t need to talk about it anymore. I know I will. #HappyInternationalWomensDay

The power inside

We all hold power. Power in our mind, power in our words, power in our actions, power in our emotions. We may not always feel it, but it’s always there. Don’t hand it over to someone else. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. You have the power to do an immense amount of good in your own life and in the world. You can do what you want, say what you want, be what you want. You’re stronger than you know. Use it wisely.

Your worth is infinite

Your worth is not your beauty. It’s not the number of inches around your waist. It’s not your intellect. It’s not the number in your bank account. It’s not your mistakes or your past. You’re more than labels and boxes and opinions. You always deserve to give yourself another chance. You always deserve to be loved and to love yourself. You always deserve to choose who you are and where you want to go. Your worth is infinite. Especially when you stay true to yourself. Your worth is on the inside.

Pen to paper

Sometimes we’re afraid to start because we’re waiting for more experience, clarity or talent. But the truth is that the perfect moment won’t ever come. We shouldn’t be afraid to put pen to paper, even if our thoughts seem knotted and jumbled. We don’t have to create a masterpiece from the very beginning. We can redraft, recraft, and remould our ideas as we go along. We only need something to start with.

Who we listen to

We need to be mindful of who we listen to. Because they affect our opinions, our choices, our lives. Sometimes we don’t even realise what we’re absorbing and sometimes there are so many voices, we don’t know where to start. But above all, listen to your own voice, your own thoughts, your own desires. You’re the one who has to live your life. You need to enjoy it. And sometimes that will mean drowning out the noise of those close to you. Make decisions on your own terms. It might not be easy, but it will be worth it.

Recipe for happiness

You can be anyone and still be happy. You can be anywhere and still be happy. You can do anything and still be happy. There are no set ingredients and no set recipes for happiness. No matter what family you’re born into, what your past looks like or what mistakes you’ve made, you can still be happy. It’s about being true to who you are, being grateful for what you have and being hopeful for what is to come. Be who you want to be and do what you want to do, and happiness will not be far behind.
